The cricket world has been shaken by the recent death of Phil Hughes in a freak accident to the head. I happened to be awake when they were showing his funeral in Australia yesterday. The Australian captain, Michael Clarke, gave one of the keynote addresses. He spoke so deeply from his heart and we both found both the occasion and some of the images he came up with profoundly moving.
Coincidentally, he referred to four of the cricket grounds that mean a lot to us: Karachi, (where we enjoyed a match many years ago between England and Pakistan on our one day off on a packed speaking tour), Lords, (where I preached at a funeral), Worcester (our local ground) and the Sydney Cricket Ground, (where Ros and Dom watched several encounters between England and Australia earlier this year).
May the Lord bring good things out of this sad loss too, and and use the deep unity that it has inspired amongst cricketers everywhere.
